Joel Sternfeld’s iDubai
Marking a change in direction to his work, Stephen Shore began working with a small digital camera and Apple’s iPhoto software in 2005, to produce a series of limited edition artist’s books. This change reflects Shores personal philosophy, ‘I have either to learn or have fun when I’m working. That’s my only guideline. If I’m not doing either, I just stop,’ he says.
With his latest series, iDubai begun in 2008, fellow American photographer Joel Sternfeld, also takes a different approach and adopts, what many consider the ‘consumer fetish’ object of the moment - the Apple iPhone to document the vast and frequently ostentatious shopping malls of Dubai.
In these playgrounds of ‘advanced capitalism,’ Sternfeld documents an era that is encapsulated in the very object with which he creates his photographic statement.
